Why do we Make Mistakes?<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe number of rules and exceptions found in the French language can make it difficult to master. Rules on the plural of nouns, for example, or rules on how to use different short words, such as \u201c\u00e0\u201d, \u201cde\u201d or \u201cen\u201d can be a big challenge to overcome.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There are other types of mistakes made by students which are not related to rules and exceptions, however. Common mistakes we see and hear all the time, caused by direct translation. For example, English speakers have a hard time with the expression: \u201cj\u2019ai besoin de\u201d.<\/p>\n
Why is that? The reason is quite simple. In English, \u201cto need\u201d is a verb. In French, however, it is a noun: \u201cbesoin\u201d, which is always<\/em> accompanied by the preposition \u201cde\u201d.<\/p>\nEnglish students will often say \u201cJe besoin faire\u201d, translating directly from their own language \u201cI need to do\u201d (subject + to need + infinitive). In French, you have a need of something: \u201cj\u2019ai besoin de faire\u201d (subject + to have + besoin de + infinitive). You could also have this same type of construction using a noun instead of an infinitive: \u201cj\u2019ai besoin d\u2019un couteau\u201d \u2013 I need a knife (subject + to have + besoin de + noun).<\/p>\n
So, while the English language uses a verb, French uses a verb coupled with a noun to express the same idea. \u00a0Both are beautiful in their own unique way!<\/p>\n
