The Alliances Fran\u00e7aises of Canada present : Le Vice-Consul, a play adapted from the novel by Marguerite Duras by Maud Andrieux (Compagnie du Barrage).<\/p>\n

India in the 1930s and French diplomacy. The Vice-Consul, far from home, on the other side of the world, in the midst of stench, misery and nameless horror, commits the irreparable to relieve other men. In Calcutta, awaiting a new posting, only Anne-Marie Stretter, the Ambassador’s wife, gets close to him. In the midst of general indifference, he’s perhaps the only one who’s still human. Le Vice-Consul embodies Duras’s view of the role of the writer as a whole, which is to express the unacceptable.<\/p>\n

Maud Andrieux is a Stage Director, Actress and Artistic Director of Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Marguerite Duras Itin\u00e9rant since 2014.
\nTrained at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Ateliers d’Aix en Provence with Alain Simon, she entered the Conservatoire National de R\u00e9gion d’Art Dramatique de Bordeaux. Her choices then turned to directors involved in several contemporary creations. She adapts great playwrights for the stage, and her approach to directing favors an intimate relationship between text and audience.<\/p>\n

On her way back from her first trip to Vietnam in 2003, she came across the writing of Marguerite Duras, and was deeply moved by her literary work. Encouraged by her director Gilbert Tiberghien, she created the Compagnie du Barrage. Numerous performances followed in Paris, Trouville-sur-Mer for the annual Marguerite Duras Encounters, in France, then in Cambodia, Vietnam, Morocco, Turkey, Italy, Nepal, India and Canada as part of the R\u00e9seau Culturel Fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 l’\u00c9tranger.<\/p>\n
