The TEF (test d’évaluation de français) is an international benchmark test. It measures your level of knowledge and skills in French. The TEF is a modular test. Depending on your objective you take, you should register for the TEF version that includes the tests you need. Results are valid for two years.

The TEF has been officially recognized as part of the DAP (Demande d’Admission Préliminaire) procedure by the French Ministry of Education since 2004.

The TEF consists of 4 compulsory tests:

  • Written comprehension: 60 min – 40 questions
  • Oral comprehension: 40 min – 40 questions
  • Written expression: 60 min – 2 questions
  • Vocabulary and structure: 30 min – 40 questions

The Oral Expression test (15 min – 2 subjects) is optional.

The test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF Canada) is a test of general French which assesses the level of proficiency in French of native and non-native French speakers alike.

The TEF Canada is recognized as an official proof of language proficiency by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)  for permanent residence applications and Canadian citizenship applications.


What does the test include?

The written comprehension, oral comprehension and written expression will be computer-based only.

No prior qualification is required to sit the exam. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age.

Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.

The objective of the TEF is to evaluate your French skills on a scale with 7 levels, from level 0 (most basic skills) to level 6 (complete fluency). This scale corresponds to:

TEF Québec (TEFaq)

TEFaq

The Test of Evaluation of French Adapted for Quebec (TEFaq) is a test which aims to measure the candidates’ level of proficiency in French, in both oral expression & oral comprehension. Candidates also have the possibility to assess their skills in written comprehension and written expression.

 The TEFaq is recognized by the Quebec Ministry for Immigration, Diversity, and Inclusion (MIDI) for Québec Selection Certificate applications.


What does the test include?

The written comprehension, oral comprehension and written expression tests will be computer-based only.

No prior qualification is required to sit the exam. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age.

Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.

The TEFaq assesses your level in French of proficiency using a 7 level scale, from level 0 (the most elementary skills) to level 6 (full mastery). This scale refers to:

TEF Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité

The TEF Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité (TEF IRN) is recognized by the French Ministry for the Interior and is indispensable for anyone applying to the French State for a resident card or a naturalisation.

It is designed to measure the level of oral/written comprehension and oral/written expression in French.


What does the test include?

The written comprehension, oral comprehension and written expression will be computer-based only.

No prior qualification is required to sit the exam. Candidates must be at least 16 years old.

Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.

The objective of the TEF is to evaluate your French skills on a scale with 7 levels, from level 0 (most basic skills) to level 6 (complete fluency). This scale corresponds to the 6 competency levels, A1 to C2, of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR).

The TEF Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité is composed of four mandatory modules that must be taken together:

  • Written comprehension: 13 questions – 30 min
  • Oral comprehension: 17 questions – 10 min
  • Written expression: computer-based – 2 topics to be covered – 30 min
  • Oral expression: Face to face with an examiner – 2 topics to be covered – 5 minutes each – 10 minutes in total.

Test d’Évaluation de Français 5 épreuves. If you want to become an immigration consultant, if you would like to study in France or if you want to do professional assessments in French, take this test.

Officially recognized since 2004 by the French National Ministry of Education in the context of the first registration for university undergraduate studies, the TEF 5 épreuves assesses your proficiency in oral and written French.

The TEF is a modular test. Depending on your objective and the steps you take, you should register for the TEF version that includes the tests you need.

IMPORTANT

  • Please note that only temporary residents of Canada can register to take the TEF with the Alliance Française Ottawa. It is not possible to take the test online or to register from outside Canada.
  • A non-refundable $75.00 fee will be charged in the event of cancellation or rescheduling before the registration deadline.
  • No refund or change of test date will be accepted if received after the registration deadline.
  • In case a candidate is not allowed to enter the exam room (for example a candidate without passport), fees will not be refunded and a new application will be required after 1 month.
  • Payment must be made in full at the time of registration.
  • No refund or credit will be granted under any circumstances past the aforementioned deadlines, unless Alliance Française has to cancel a session of tests, in which case an alternative exam date will be offered, or a full refund will be granted.
  • An official notification including the tests schedule will be sent by email to the candidate approximately 5 days before the test.
  • On the day of the exam, candidates must be available all day (8am-6pm).
  • No prior qualification is required to sit the exam.
  • Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.
  • Results certificates are personal and confidential. We cannot divulge them to anyone other than the candidate.

It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to ensure that he/she is registered for the appropriate exam. Alliance Française Ottawa and its employees cannot be held responsible for the choices made by the candidate. Please refer to the Immigration Service to select the right test.

When signing up for the listening test, candidates understand that they will have to read simple sentences written in French, and certify that they are able to do so.

Computer Based examination (TEF): ability to use a computer

In order to take the computer based TEF listening, reading and writing tests, you must have basic knowledge of computer skills (read on a screen, use a mouse pad and a key board). If you cannot use a computer (read on a screen, use a mouse and a keyboard), you must request accommodations at the time of registration. All requests for accommodations must be accompanied by supporting documents (doctoŕ s note to specify the nature of the situation and which arrangements must be made to ensure you take the exam in the optimal conditions).

EXAMINATION DAY

Candidates must check in with the supervisor of the official centre or the invigilator(s) with their notification of schedule and their valid piece of identification (For TEF Canada, TEFaq & TEF Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité : Permanent residence = passport only; citizenship = passport, permanent resident card or driver’s license – For TEF 5 épreuves : Passport, permanent resident card or driver’s license).

Candidates WITHOUT VALID PIECE OF IDENTIFICATION will be refused to access the examination; ne exception will be made.

After the identity check, the head of the official centre or the invigilator(s) will take an identification picture of each candidate and direct candidates to their assigned seats in the examination room.

The written comprehension, oral comprehension and written expression tests will be computer-based only. Candidates must leave their piece of ID visibly on the table for the entirety of the test so that identity checks can be performed throughout the test.

During the entire examination, no exits will be permitted, unless in case of emergency or health issue previously informed by the candidate and justified with a medical certificate.

During the entirety of the exams, communication amongst candidates or the outside will not be permitted.

Candidates arriving late will not be allowed in the examination room once the examination has started.

In the event of fraud or misconduct by a candidate (disturbing the examination procedure, communication or attempt to communicate with other candidates or the outside…), candidates expose themselves to immediate removal from the examination room as well as a ban from taking the test for a period that will be determined by the CCI Paris-Ile De France.

AFTER THE TEST

  • An official certificate of results will be sent by email 4 to 8 weeks after the test.
  • If you need a duplicate of your certificate, order it directly on this website!
