FRENCH LANGUAGE TEST FOR CANADA


The TCF (test des connaissances du français) evaluate your French skills on a scale of 6 levels. This scale corresponds to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR).

If you want to immigrate or continue your studies in French educational institutions, take the TCF. Results are valid for two years.

As part of the DAP (Demande d’Admission Préliminaire) procedure, students are now required to take a TCF tout public WITH a compulsory written expression test.

Alliance Française Ottawa offers different TCF versions. Make sure the TCF version you choose is best suited to your situation, and confirm which modules you must take. It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate exam. Alliance Française Ottawa and its employees cannot be held responsible for the choices made by the candidate. Please refer to the Immigration Service to select the right test.

TCF Canada (computer-based)

The Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada) is recognized as an official proof of language proficiency by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)  for permanent residence applications and Canadian citizenship applications.

The TCF Canada consists of 4 mandatory modules designed to evaluate your level of proficiency in both oral and written skills:

  • Oral comprehension: 35 min – 39 questions
  • Written comprehension: 60 min – 39 questions
  • Oral expression: 12 min – 3 subjects to be covered
  • Written expression: 60 min – 3 mandatory topics to be covered

The results are valid for two years.

TCF Québec

TCF Québec

The Test de connaissance du français pour le Québec (TCF Québec) is a test of proficiency in general French specially designed with the standards of the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion (MIDI) du Québec. It is only intended for people wishing to settle in Québec.

The TCF Québec consists of 4 optional modules to evaluate your level of proficiency in oral and written skills:

  • Oral comprehension: 25 min – 34 items
  • Written comprehension: 50 min – 34 items
  • Written expression: 60 min – 3 topics
  • Oral expression: 12 min – 3 topics

The results are valid for two years.

TCF Tout Public

TCF Tout Public

The Test de Connaissance du français (TCF) is designed for those who wish to assess and certify their level of proficiency in French for:

  • Personal purposes: the TCF provides a snapshot of the candidate’s proficiency in written and oral French.
  • Professional purposes: the TCF certificate is a benchmark of the candidate’s language abilities and may be used to enhance job applications.
  • Academic purposes: the TCF is required by postsecondary education institutes for students wishing to apply for the final year in undergraduate or postgraduate programs.

As part of the DAP (Demande d’Admission Préliminaire) procedure, students are now required to take a TCF tout public WITH a compulsory written expression test.

The TCF TP is composed of one mandatory module called “épreuves obligatoires”:

  • Oral comprehension: 25 min – 29 questions
  • Language structures: 15 min – 18 items
  • Written comprehension: 45 min – 29 questions

And two optional modules:

  • Written expression: 60 min – 3 topics
  • Oral expression: 12 min – 3 topics

PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASE :

The mandatory components (Listening, Reading, and Language Structures) must be purchased when registering for the Written Expression and/or Oral Expression tests.

It is not possible to register for the Written Expression and/or Oral Expression tests only, unless the mandatory components have already been completed.

Exception:
Candidates who have taken the mandatory components of the TCF Tout Public within the last 18 months may register for the Written Expression and/or Oral Expression tests only.

In this case, a copy of the official TCF Tout Public certificate must be sent to info@af.ca
after registration.

Any incomplete or non-compliant registration will be cancelled.

Candidates must check in when arriving at our official exam centre with their notification of schedule/convocation and their valid passport. Candidates WITHOUT VALID IDENTIFICATION and A PRINTED CONVOCATION will be refused to access the examination; no exception will be made.

Oral comprehension, written comprehension and written expression are computer-based only. Candidates must leave their piece of ID visibly on the table for the entirety of the test so that identity checks can be performed throughout the test.

During the entire examination, no exits will be permitted, unless in case of emergency or health issue previously informed by the candidate and justified with a medical certificate.

During the entirety of the exams, communication amongst candidates or the outside will not be permitted.

Candidates arriving late will not be allowed in the examination room.

In the event of fraud or misconduct by a candidate (disturbing the examination procedure, communication or attempt to communicate with other candidates or the outside…), candidates expose themselves to immediate removal from the examination room as well as a ban from taking the test for a period that will be determined by the France Éducation international.

AFTER THE TEST & RE-EVALUATION

SPECIAL NEEDS

  • An official certificate of results will be available from 2 to 3 weeks after the test and will be sent by email to the candidates.
  • It is possible to request a re-evaluation. Only the written and oral expression tests may be re-corrected. The candidate must send a request for a new correction of the written and/or oral expression test, together with the re-evaluation request form (to be obtained from your test center) to the test center, which will forward the request to France Éducation international. This request will not be accepted until one month after the attestations have been sent. A fee of $100 will be charged for this request for each component.

  • Please note that the official certificate of results is the only document that can be used for official purposes.
  • No duplicate of the certificate of results will be delivered.
